I'm so excited to invite everyone to celebrate Saraswati Puja with Nova Dance at The Theatre Centre coming up in January. As a child growing up in Toronto, Saraswati Puja usually meant I’d being wearing my dance costume under a parka, and heading out first thing on a cold, blustery, winter morning to a community centre, or dance studio, or even someone’s home. Once there, my father, Atin, who is a Hindu priest, would perform the rites of the puja, and I, alongside many other Bengali children, would dance, sing, recite poetry, or draw a picture to celebrate and honour the goddess who loved the arts. We would eat the food that had been offered to the her, and wish that some of her “favourites” were served more often. I am filled with immense joy to be able to share this beautiful practice through Nova Dance’s new relationship with The Theatre Centre. Hope to see you there!
